Thrifty Ice Cream: In San Felipe, our version of “Starbucks” is located on Mexico RT 5 next to Baja Jimmies near the entrance to Campo Octillo but on the other side of the street. Or take Chetumal (the road which the Mexican 5 turns into in San Felipe) to the stop sign one street before the Malecon (the last street which runs down the beach) and turn right. It has a huge red sign, you can’t miss it. They have specialty coffees and serve ice cream in a cone or cup and have WiFi. A friend recommended the french fries. They are not the typical fat fried that are sold elsewhere but are the skinny McDonalds type.

Taco de Borrego: A friend recommended this for their lamb tacos. We sampled the lamb tacos the other day. The person that recommended them was what the Aussies call, Spot on. Very very good. This taco stand is located just past the circle/glorietta on Chetumal (road to down town San Felipe), across the street from the older PEMEX gas station on the right.

They serve traditional tacos on warm corn tortillas with the lamb, cabbage, salsa. Two was not enough.

This Health Food Store and Body Shop is a wonderful store. Diane has a little bit of everything and she is a font of knowledge. Drop in, have some free tea and explore the store. She has everything from Sushi ingredients to herbs, vitamins and supplements. There is a small health library too, oh heck you have got to go see. I always feel so rejuvenated when I leave there. You would have to drive north to find items in this lovely store and with Diane’s knowledge you will get exactly what you need. The Body shop is open by appointment Monday through Saturday 9:00 to 5pm. Summer hours are Tues-Fri 10:30-3:30pm. La Cabana Restaurant: This Mexican restaurant is fantastic, nicely decorated, good inexpensive menus and better yet, great food. No license to serve beer or wine but nonetheless very good. When we went in I did not know it was a Mexican Restaurant. The six place table and chairs all in dark wood with white table cloths and silver set said French or Italian. The menu said different with breakfast, lunch and dinner available. Breakfasts are no more than 50 pesos, lunches topping at 75 pesos and dinners, including steak at a high of 140 pesos. When we went it was busy, most of the ten tables were full with a group. The sound level was high as voices of conversation and chatter echoed. Located just off  San Felipe Airport Road you turn right at the Glorietta, then left at the first stop sign and go one block. It is on the left corner. Street names are the corner of Ensenada and Mar de Rojo. It is well marked.

Owner Cliff has completely redecorated inside and out. It is more bright and roomy. My favorite is the 1957 TBird Juke box. How can someone that grew up in the 60’ not like that. The Lions meets there monthly. They have all the pizza you can eat for $5.50. That might push a place into failure if I am there too much. I have to find out what night that is or you can call 577-2585. Bingo Thurs at 1pm. Try the Filet Mignon dinner w/margarita and dessert for $7.50. A glass of beer is always $1.00. Saturday night at Los Arcos; Chicken and Dumplings & Dessert $5.00 from 430PM to closing. NASCAR on the Big Screens, hot dogs $0.50. Beer for $1.00 US and free popcorn from 430PM to closing.

Delicious Potroast

The turnout for the Margarita, Filet Mignon Dinner & dessert was great. Everyone said they should do it again. So, all day Sunday 12PM to 8PM the dinner special will be served and it’s still only $7.50US

Me enjoying my champagne.

Me enjoying my champagne.

These two ladies are enjoying their adult beverage.
These two ladies are enjoying their adult beverage.

Hello out there.

We’ve been to Jollymon the last 4 Fridays.  It is a San Felipe sports bar next to a deli north of town.  On Fridays they serve free champagne to the ladies.  Yes champagne, and if that isnt’ good enough, sushi for all, gratis! John and Lynn are fixtures here in San Felipe and have given us all a great place to call home.  Some say a neighborhood bar, I choose to call it a meeting place.  Seems if you want to know what is going on, Jollymon is the place to be.  Seems everytime we go, we see all our friends come in at one time or another.

The free champagne is not all.  Kareoke on Tuesday nights, Wednesday is Texas Holdem and a new addition is Agave Blues, a local band on Friday night.  There is something going on every night.  The San Rail Pizza has a booth in the corner with slices, hot dogs and on weekends tacos.   Come on down, enjoy the free popcorn and peanuts at the bar, the DJ music, the local color and airconditioning.  It is a fun place to be.

Jollymon is not the only place in San Felipe.  Maybe you fancy being a yatchwoman?  The San Felipe Yatch Club may be for you.  Or maybe you enjoy bowling? There is a great bowling place in Percebu.  OH did I mention it is not the traditional bowling with pins and heavy balls?  We are of the mature crowd here in San Felipe, so when we go bowling we go to Percebu and gather around the table and enjoy a consuela bowl.  Consuela bowl, my yes a nice concoction of ice, fresh fruit and a secret mixture of tropical and alcohol fluids…..rum I think and who knows what else.  If it taste harmless as a tropical juice drink why care.  They are to be shared with straws and for sipping only.  Like the Long Island Iced tea, the consuela bowl just might mess with your ability to walk.  Bowls are available for any size crowd from a $10, $20, even a $100 bowl….bowling anyone?

On Sunday mornings we often go out to breakfast…..we are about to leave, its 935….late for breakfast huh? Well today it’s a special one……we have done it before but it is worth doing again, so we will.  We will leave here and run up to Sundance Deli to pick up a copy of the San Diego Tribune that is delivered here daily.  It cost more but it is a touch of the Old Country.  Then we will slip into town on the 4 lane highway.  Yes for those that have not been to San Felipe in a long time; the highway into town is 4 lanes and extends from town about 15 miles or more north and being worked on constantly.  THe talk of a 4 lane road to Mexicali may come to be sooner than we all thought.  ANYWAY, when we get to town we will go to Fat Boys at the corner of Chetemal and the Malecon.  Tom has a small place there with great Pizza and Sliders and more.  But, Sunday morning from 10-12 while it lasts he has free breakfast, yes FREE.  You purchase a Bloody Mary, a beer, or other adult beverage and breakfast is free.  The menu is limited but my favorite is huevos ranchero…mmm I will tell u more later…..maybe even a picture….mouth is watering now….later….

The pools? the beaches? downtown? more blue crabs? fisherman? shopping? the homes and condos inside, a video tour? do tell  what would move you to come? The local bands? places to party? places to relax in solitude? Do tell….I wanna make you wish you were here in San Felipe, in Baja, relaxing in Paradise.

Cooked blue crab with old bay seasoning, fresh from the sea of cortez

Cooked blue crab with old bay seasoning, fresh from the sea of cortez

My word I never thought my blue crab discovery in Baja would have caused such a stir….we have friends from Maryland that live here and are building an adobe home…we told them about the blue crabs and they were so excited…..then over the 4th of July weekend we had a party and invited about 30 friends.  Well the party was on the 5th because there were so many things to do in San Felipe on the 4th that we just decided we wanted to participate and offer our party the next day….lo and behold it lasted two days we had so much food…..that brings me back to the blue crabs…One of our neighbors is an Aussie aNd when we brought out the crabs he was so excited…he remembers having them back home aNd missed them so….well not to be surprised again…we had a friend over for dinner the night of the 12th.  He is our local pastor and comes down from El Centro at least once a month.  He has a small trailer here that he and his wife live in when they are here and cant wait to retire and move here…..anyway he has had an eclectic carreer and spent many years in Australia…he too was excited about the crabs…..so …BAJA, San Felipe, Fun, Good company, and BLUE CRABS..

For those of you that dont know what I am talking to..here are a couple pics..
